Aymag

Provincial-level or second-level unit of administration in Mongolia since 1921. Aymags are divided into somon (q.v.). Traditionally, an aymag was a tribe.

Mongolia is divided into 21 aymags or provinces. "Aymag" is the Mongolian word for prefecture. Because Mongolia was a province of China though, it was divided into aymags (prefectures of the province of Outer Mongolia). They kept it like this even when they gained their independence.
